If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.
Eggs, you might be surprised to find out, are great at battling depression. You should make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try consuming a few eggs to cheer up!
Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are good if you would like to be in a better mood. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.
Grains can be great for overcoming a bad mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. You digest them faster than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed.
