Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood

In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. At times, if the comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, may boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you combat depression. You must see to it, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Eat a few eggs to jolly up!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to raise your mood. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which increases your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Nuts, on top of bettering your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

It’s not difficult to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really great for helping raise your happiness levels. These foods can help you feel full for longer too, helping you feel better. Feeling hungry can truly make you feel awful! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood sugar which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You were already aware that that green tea helps you be healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Test out these suggestions instead!
