Use Food to Boost Your Mood
In general, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and have to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that basically can improve your moods when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, you might be amazed to find out, are terrific at combating depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that affect your mood. Eat an egg and be happy!
Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given moment. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a great source of protein.
If you wish to beat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.
It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually excellent for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full too which can really help to improve your mood. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel healthier. And now you are aware that green tea can help you be happier too!
Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
