Foods That Make You Happy

In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to consume. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can boost your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you might be amazed to find out, are terrific at battling depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, especially the yolks, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for raising your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Try consuming a couple of eggs to cheer up!

Make a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all great for improving your mood. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you would like to feel happier. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.

It’s easy to drive away your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can truly help to make your mood better. Feeling starved can be a real downer! These grains can elevate your mood because it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. You digest them more quickly than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You were simply waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to become healthy when you drink green tea. And now you are aware that it can help improve your mood also!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Go with these hints instead!
