Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood
A lot of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we should avoid them. Often, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to consume. There are several foods that, when you eat them, could better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, you may be surprised to learn, are wonderful at combating depression. You need to see to it, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and be happy!
Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more you have of it, the happier you will feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a great protein source.
If you want to defeat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you fight your depression.
It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly excellent for helping increase your happiness levels. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling famished can be terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your sugar levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!
