Use Food to Improve Your Mood
A lot of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are terrible and are to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is very true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly healthy and good for us to consume. There are several foods that actually can boost your moods when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at beating back depression. Just be sure that you don’t throw away the yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to boost your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating an egg and jolly up!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more serotonin in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to combat depression. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
It’s not difficult to drive away your bad mood when you are eating grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full too which can actually help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Green tea is wonderful for moods. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You already knew green tea could help you be so much healthier. Now you know green tea can help raise your mood too!
So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
