Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood
A lot of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at beating back depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Consume an egg and feel better!
Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more of this chemical in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein food source.
Cold water fish are good if you are wanting to feel happier. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.
It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually great for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can really bring you down! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy to digest. You digest these grains quicker than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same calming the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become better. And now you know green tea can help raise your mood also!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a few of these tips instead.
