Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood

A lot of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be very nutritious and good for us to eat. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, may boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, try a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are terrific for helping you fight depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the yolk. Whenever you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more of this chemical in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a great source of protein.

If you wish to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all high in omega-3 and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can really help you overcome depression.

Some grains are actually excellent for driving away bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are terrific at helping you feel happier. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods also. Feeling starved can really make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is really great for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you be healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try these tips instead!
