Instructions to make Ondeh Ondeh:
  1. Peel, cube and steam the sweet potato until very soft and mashable. Finely mash the potato while still hot.
  2. Add the glutinous rice flour, salt and rice flour, pandan leaf extract (and optional food colouring) into the hot mashed sweet potato. Mix until it becomes a smooth pliable dough.
  3. Knead with wet hands if the dough is too dry. Or add more glutinous rice flour a teaspoon at a time if it is still too shaggy and wet.
  4. Put a medium sized pot of water to a boil. Cover dough with a damp towel while you grate or bash the gula Melaka into small pieces.
  5. Break pieces of dough and roll them into quail egg size. Gently push your thumb into the dough to create a depression that will allow you to fill it with the gula Melaka. Pinch and seal, roll gently to a ball and immediately drop it into the boiling water. Continue.
  6. When balls are cooked, they will float to the top. Continue cooking for about 2 minutes after they float. Scoop and drain, drop them straight away into a tray with the desiccated coconut and roll to coat completely.
  7. Let the balls cool to room temperature before eating.
  8. Do not refrigerate. Eat within a day. Or if you have to refrigerate them, steam them again to soften before eating.

Try Using Food to Improve Your Mood

Many of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we should keep away from them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. At times, comfort foods can be utterly nutritious and good for us to eat. Several foods honestly do boost your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you battle depression. Just make sure that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating an egg and be happy!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of bettering your mood, can be a great protein source.

Cold water fish are good if you wish to feel happier. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are great at helping you be happier. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to make your mood better. It’s not difficult to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental focus while calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
