Use Food to Improve Your Mood
Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be really nourishing and good for you. Several foods honestly do elevate your mood when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be really great at fighting back depression. You must make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try eating an egg and be happy!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic protein food source.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to battle depression. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Some grains are actually great for repelling bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood sugar which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You were sure green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be healthier. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to elevate your moods also!
So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
