Foods That Make Your Mood Better

A lot of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are bad and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly nutritious and good for us to consume. There are several foods that basically can boost your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. You need to be sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Try to eat an egg and feel a lot happier!

Make a trail mixfrom different seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for improving your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a super source of protein.

If you wish to defeat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you overcome depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually excellent for helping increase your happiness levels. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling hungry can be awful! These grains can help your mood elevate as it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were just anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that it helps you to lift your moods as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
