Foods That Make Your Mood Better

Many of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are terrible and are to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really healthy and good for you. Some foods really do raise your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to discover, are wonderful at battling depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you raise your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Eat a couple of eggs to feel better!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more serotonin in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein food source.

If you would like to beat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight back depression.

Grains can be great for fighting a terrible mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you feel better. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to better your mood. Feeling starved can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your sugar levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You were simply anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!

See, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you wish to feel better! Try a few of these hints instead.
