How to Improve Your Mood with Food
In general, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to eat. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, may better your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to feel better!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for elevating your mood. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are great if you wish to be in a better mood. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all rich in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.
Grains can be good for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to make your mood better. Feeling hungry can truly make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest these foods more quickly than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you become better. And now you are aware that green tea can help raise your mood too!
You can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
