Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood
In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and should be avoided. At times, if the comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be extremely nourishing and good for you. There are some foods that, when you eat them, could better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you fight depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you raise your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Consume an egg and feel better!
Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, along with improving your mood, can be a super protein source.
Cold water fish are great if you wish to feel happier. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Grains can be great for fighting a terrible mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you feel better. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to improve your mood. Feeling hungry can be terrible! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel so much healthier. Now you know it can help you be happier also!
As you can see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
