Foods That Can Make You Happy

Many of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we should keep away from them. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that actually can improve your moods when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you raise your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try eating a couple of eggs to feel better!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are great if you would like to feel better. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

Grains can be excellent for fighting a terrible mood. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to better your mood. Feeling starved can be a real downer! These grains can improve your mood since it’s easy for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Your mood can actually be helped by green tea. You were simply waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you know that applies to your mood also!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Try these hints instead!
