Use Food to Boost Your Mood
In general, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that basically can improve your moods when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, you may be surprised to discover, are terrific at battling depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that affect your mood. Try eating an egg and cheer up!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more serotonin in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a superb protein source.
Cold water fish are good if you want to feel happier. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you overcome your depression.
It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping raise your happiness levels. These foods fill you up better and that can help you with your moods as well. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You were just expecting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You probably already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know green tea can help improve your mood as well!
As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Test out these suggestions instead!
