Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we should keep away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really healthy and good for you. There are some foods that actually can improve your moods when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are great at battling depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for raising your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Try eating some eggs to cheer up!

Put together a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a great protein food source.

If you wish to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you fight your depression.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. They can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel hungry! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood sugar which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly good for your mood. You knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to be healthy when you consume green tea. And now you are aware that it can help raise your mood also!

See, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Go with these tips instead!
