Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood
For the most part, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to consume. There are several foods that really can boost your moods when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you battle depression. You need to see to it, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and be happy!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a terrific source of protein.
If you would like to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.
It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping raise your happiness levels. They help you feel full also which can actually help to improve your mood. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while also calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that it helps you to lift your moods as well!
Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Test out these hints instead!
