How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Many of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are terrible and are to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, could improve your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really great at beating back depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. Whenever you would like to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot happier!

Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to combat depression. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a bad mood. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. It’s easy to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You were simply waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with a certain amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps improve your mental sharpness while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you become better. And now you are aware that it can help you be happier also!

As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Go with these suggestions instead!
