How to Boost Your Mood with Food
In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be super nutritious and good for you. A number of foods actually do raise your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try some of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for boosting your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Eat an egg and feel better!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Nuts, in addition to elevating your mood, can be a great source of protein.
Cold water fish are great if you want to feel happier. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you fight your depression.
Some grains are actually wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all wonderful for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full too which can really help to better your mood. Feeling famished can really make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your glucose levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is really good for your mood. You were sure it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood too!
As you can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are not good for you to feel better! Test out these tips instead!
