Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better

A lot of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be super nutritious and good for you. There are some foods that, when you consume them, could better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are fantastic at fighting depression. You need to be sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Eat an egg and jolly up!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein food source.

If you wish to battle depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you overcome your depression.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really great for helping raise your happiness levels. They fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods also. It’s easy to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become better. Now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood also!

See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try these tips instead!
