How to Improve Your Mood with Food

A lot of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are not good and to be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you eat them, could better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you might be surprised to find out, are great at combating depression. You need to be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for boosting your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat some eggs to cheer up!

Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, along with bettering your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.

It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are terrific at helping you feel better. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! These grains can help your mood elevate since it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. You digest these grains quicker than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You just knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood too!

See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try several of these instead!
