Discover How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

For the most part, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be perfectly nourishing and good for us to eat. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to raise your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Try eating a few eggs to feel better!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more you have of it, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, in addition to elevating your mood, can be a great source of protein.

If you wish to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3s. DHA and omega-3s are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you battle your depression.

Grains can be good for fighting a terrible mood. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are fantastic at helping you be happier. These foods fill you up better and that can help you with your moods too. Feeling famished can truly bring you down! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are easy to digest. You digest them more quickly than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Your mood can actually be helped by green tea. You were simply waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps improve your mental focus while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be so much healthier. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood also!

As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Test out these suggestions instead!
