Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we have to stay away from them. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be extremely nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that, when you eat them, may boost your mood. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at beating back depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to raise your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that dictate your mood. Consume an egg and feel happier!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more you have of it, the happier you will feel. Nuts, in addition to bettering your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are good if you would like to be in a better mood. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are terrific at helping you be happier. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods also. Feeling starved can be a real downer! These grains can improve your mood as it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is really great for your mood. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You already knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. Now you are aware that it can help improve your mood also!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try these hints instead!
