Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood
In general, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and must be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly nutritious and good for us to eat. There are some foods that really can raise your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, you may be amazed to find out, are terrific at fighting depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you raise your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Consume an egg and feel a lot better!
Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all fantastic for helping to raise your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a great source of protein.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to fight depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Some grains are actually great for repelling bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping increase your happiness levels. These foods can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This helps better your mental sharpness while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood too!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
