Try Using Food to Improve Your Mood

Mostly, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. A number of foods really do raise your mood when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and jolly up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all helpful for improving your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to combat depression. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly raise your mood.

Grains can be great for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really great for helping increase your happiness levels. They fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods also. It’s not difficult to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are easy for your body to digest. You digest these grains faster than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you consume green tea. And now you know green tea can help you be happier too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
