Use Food to Boost Your Mood
Many of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we need to stay away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that really can raise your moods when you eat them. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, try some of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you combat depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Eat some eggs to jolly up!
Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are good if you want to feel happier. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.
Grains can be wonderful for overcoming a bad mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you feel happier. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can be terrible! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You were sure green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. And now you know green tea can help improve your mood too!
As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
