How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Most of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are terrible and are to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be extremely nutritious and good for you. Several foods actually do improve your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at beating back depression. Just see to it that you do not toss the yolk. The egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for boosting your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try consuming a couple of eggs to jolly up!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more you have of it, the happier you will feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a super protein source.

If you wish to battle depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all high in omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Some grains are actually wonderful for driving away bad moods. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel better. These foods can help you feel full for longer too, which can help your mood too. It’s easy to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. You digest them faster than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were sure it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you are aware that it helps you to raise your moods too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
