Use Food to Improve Your Mood

A lot of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we need to keep away from them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. Some foods actually do improve your mood when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at beating back depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you raise your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you would like to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you fight your depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping boost your happiness levels. They can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. Feeling famished can be a real downer! These grains can improve your mood since it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your glucose levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try a couple of of these hints instead.
