Foods That Make Your Mood Better

Most of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we must keep away from them. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to consume. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, could improve your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to find out, are terrific at battling depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Try eating an egg and jolly up!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin production. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a terrific source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you overcome depression.

Grains can be wonderful for fighting a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to better your mood. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were just expecting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you be better. And now you are aware that it can help you be happier too!

So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try a few of these hints instead.
