Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood
For the most part, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and have to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly healthy and good for us to consume. There are several foods that, when you consume them, can improve your mood. If you seem to be a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you fight depression. You must be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. Every time you would like to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Consume an egg and be happy!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, along with elevating your mood, can be a great protein source.
Cold water fish are good if you would like to be in a better mood. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.
Grains can be wonderful for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They can help you feel full for longer too, helping you feel better. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your sugar levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is truly good for your mood. You were just anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You already knew green tea could help you feel healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
