How to Boost Your Mood with Food
Many of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are bad and are to be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at fighting back depression. You should be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. Every time you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!
Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein food source.
If you wish to fight depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3s. DHA and omega-3s are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly boost your mood.
It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods too. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest. You digest them quicker than other things which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you know that it helps you to lift your moods too!
As you can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try a couple of of these tips instead.
