Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood
Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be perfectly nutritious and good for us to consume. Some foods honestly do improve your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at beating back depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Consume an egg and jolly up!
Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.
Grains can be great for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can really help to improve your mood. Feeling hungry can truly bring you down! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.
