How to Elevate Your Mood with Food
A lot of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are bad and are to be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, could boost your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.
Eggs, you may be astonished to discover, are terrific at battling depression. You must make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you raise your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Eat an egg and feel a lot better!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all good for raising your mood. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein source.
Cold water fish are excellent if you are wanting to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.
Grains can be great for overcoming a bad mood. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full also which can actually help to improve your mood. It’s not hard to feel low when you feel hungry! These grains can elevate your mood as it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you feel so much healthier. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood as well!
See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
