Learn How to Boost Your Mood with Food

For the most part, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and have to be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. A number of foods actually do raise your mood when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to find out, are fantastic at battling depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for boosting your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Try eating a couple of eggs to jolly up!

Put together a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more of it you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to bettering your mood, can be a super source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3s. These are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly boost your mood.

Grains can be great for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you feel better. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your sugar levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood can actually be helped by green tea. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You probably already knew how easy it is to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
