Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

A lot of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are not good and to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to consume. Several foods really do improve your mood when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for raising your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Eat a few eggs to feel better!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more you have of it, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a fantastic protein food source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you wish to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly excellent for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full too which can really help to make your mood better. Feeling starved can truly make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. You digest these foods quicker than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while also loosening up the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods too!

So you see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try a few of these tips instead.
