Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood

Most of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are not good and to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be super nourishing and good for you. There are some foods that really can raise your moods when you eat them. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you fight depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the egg yolk. Whenever you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you improve your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Try to eat an egg and feel a lot happier!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all great for elevating your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more of this chemical in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to fight depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really wonderful for helping boost your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can be terrible! These grains can improve your mood because it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is high in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you drink green tea. And now you know it can help improve your mood as well!

See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
