Foods That Make You Happy
Most of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we need to avoid them. At times, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. A number of foods actually do raise your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at fighting back depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to feel better!
Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given time. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.
Some grains are actually wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are terrific at helping you have a happier mood. They help you feel full as well which can really help to make your mood better. Feeling famished can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Green tea is actually great for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is found to be packed full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel so much healthier. And now you know it can help you be happier too!
So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try a couple of of these tips instead.
