Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood
A lot of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to stay away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. A number of foods actually do elevate your mood when you consume them. If you seem to be a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.
Eggs, you may be amazed to discover, are great at fighting depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that affect your mood. Try eating an egg and cheer up!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a fantastic protein source.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to combat depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.
Some grains are truly wonderful for driving away bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping raise your happiness levels. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods as well. Feeling starved can be awful! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Green tea is actually good for your mood. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while also calming the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. Now you are aware that it can help you be happier also!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
