Use Food to Improve Your Mood

In general, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and have to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be super nourishing and good for you. There are a number of foods that basically can improve your moods when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are wonderful for helping you fight depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Consume an egg and jolly up!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all terrific for helping to boost your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more of this chemical in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are good if you are wanting to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.

It’s not hard to overcome your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. These foods can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can truly bring you down! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. You digest these foods more quickly than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were sure green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. And now you know green tea can help raise your mood too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
