Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we should avoid them. Often, if your comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, could improve your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really great at beating back depression. You must see to it, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to raise your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Eat an egg and jolly up!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible because these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that directs your brain how you feel at all times. The more of this chemical in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic protein food source.

Cold water fish are great if you wish to feel happier. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you are eating grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all great for helping you feel better. They help you feel full also which can actually help to improve your mood. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is truly good for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while also calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. And now you are aware that it can help raise your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try several of these instead!
