How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Most of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are not good and should be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be super nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to learn, are terrific at combating depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. Every time you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Consume an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of bettering your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are great if you are wanting to feel happier. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

Grains can be great for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually wonderful for helping boost your happiness levels. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. It’s easy to feel depressed when you feel hungry! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your sugar levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while also loosening up the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you become healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these tips instead.
