Foods That Make Your Mood Better
A lot of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are not good and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that, when you eat them, may improve your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, you may be astonished to learn, are wonderful at combating depression. You should be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for raising your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and cheer up!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein food source.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.
Grains can be great for fighting a terrible mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you feel better. They can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you are starving! These grains can improve your mood since it’s easy for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is really good for your mood. You were simply anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that it helps you to raise your moods also!
See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try a couple of of these tips instead.
