How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Most of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are not good and to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really nutritious and good for you. There are a number of foods that actually can improve your moods when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional boost, try a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you battle depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Consume an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, along with bettering your mood, can be a great protein source.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you wish to fight depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you fight your depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you feel better. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. It’s not hard to feel low when you feel famished! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You just knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you are well aware that it helps you to elevate your moods as well!

As you can see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you want to feel better! Try some of these instead!
