Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

In general, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly healthy and good for us to eat. There are several foods that actually can improve your moods when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional boost, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. You must be sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. When you would like to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that control your mood. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Make a trail mixout of various seeds and nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein source.

If you want to fight depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

It’s easy to drive away your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can really help to better your mood. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you feel hungry! These grains can improve your mood because it’s easy for your body to digest them. You digest these foods faster than other things which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is actually good for your mood. You were just expecting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood as well!

See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try several of these instead!
