Use Food to Boost Your Mood
Most of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is very true. At times, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to eat. There are several foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.
Eggs, you may be surprised to learn, are fantastic at battling depression. Just make sure that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for boosting your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Try eating an egg and jolly up!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein food source.
If you wish to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.
Some grains are truly wonderful for driving away bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are fantastic at helping you have a happier mood. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. It’s not difficult to feel low when you feel famished! These grains can elevate your mood since it’s easy for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood also!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Test out these tips instead!
