Use Food to Improve Your Mood
Most of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to eat. There are several foods that actually can boost your moods when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, test out a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you combat depression. You need to be sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that affect your mood. Eat an egg and feel a lot happier!
Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all terrific for helping to boost your mood. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein source.
Cold water fish are great if you would like to be in a better mood. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.
It’s not hard to overcome your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually great for helping boost your happiness levels. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, which is a mood improver. It’s easy to feel low when you are starving! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest them faster than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Green tea is really good for your mood. You knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while relaxing the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you be better. Now you know that it helps you to lift your moods also!
So you see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are not good for you just so to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
