How to Elevate Your Mood with Food
Most of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are terrible and should be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. Some foods really do elevate your mood when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try a couple of these.
Eggs, you might be amazed to learn, are wonderful at fighting depression. Just make sure that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you raise your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat an egg and cheer up!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to raise your mood. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which increases your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a great source of protein.
Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to fight depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you battle your depression.
It’s easy to drive away your bad mood when you are eating grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full also which can really help to improve your mood. Feeling starved can really make you feel terrible! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not difficult for your body to digest. You digest them more quickly than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Green tea is actually great for your mood. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood too!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these tips instead.
