Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood
A lot of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we must stay away from them. Often, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. Some foods actually do boost your mood when you consume them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are terrific for helping you fight depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for raising your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try eating an egg and cheer up!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all terrific for helping to boost your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein food source.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly boost your mood.
Grains can be wonderful for fighting a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. These foods can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. It’s not difficult to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are easy to digest. You digest them faster than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know it can help raise your mood too!
You can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Try some of these instead!
