How to Boost Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is very true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to eat. There are some foods that actually can improve your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really terrific at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you don’t throw away the yolk. The egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Try consuming a few eggs to feel better!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to battle depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly boost your mood.

Some grains are actually wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping boost your happiness levels. These grains fill you up better and that can help you with your moods as well. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your sugar levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You were just waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you feel healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!

You can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try several of these instead!
